Also, don’t forget to add a tree stump at the bottom! Be sure to press lightly onto the paper with your pencil as you’re sketching, since these pencil lines will be erased later. For example, a broad, loose oval for the oval-shaped tree, a few ovals turned slightly on their sides for the irregular tree, a tall cone shape for the conical tree, and so on. Reference images are a huge help in not only drawing your subject, but also in choosing colors, which we will discuss in the next blog!īut, for now, let’s begin by loosely sketching geometric shapes that encompass each tree.

In most cases, this means using the internet to find photos but you can also go outside and take reference images yourself to better capture what you’re looking to draw. One of the first things you want to do before starting a new subject or drawing is to gather reference images. Today, however, we will be showing a more realistic way to draw and outline trees! So, with that being said, grab your sketchbook, pencils, and Copic Multiliner pens and let’s get started by gathering some reference images below! Practice drawing trees and landscape outlines as shown above extensively. In our previous blog, we showed a new technique – the doodling technique – and how you can apply this method to coloring both flowers and leaves (which are both commonly doodled). This fun simple composition can be done quickly and is always enjoyable to do. Here the trees are drawn at a distance and hence much smaller. Outline Drawing of Composition 3 (Trees at a distance): Draw the trees in the front first and partially hide the foliage of trees in the back to create relative order. In this composition, higher density of trees are used to created a wooded feel. Outline Drawing of Composition 2 (Wooded Feel with higher density of Trees): By using less density of trees, horizon is visible and a sense of distance is conveyed. Study the examples below. Here we first draw the horizon very faintly and draw few scattered trees receding to the horizon. Outline Drawing of Composition 1 (Scattered Trees receding to Horizon): Practice extensively drawing the outline of trees in a convincing manner as shown above.

Remember to draw the trees in front (foreground) first and make them smaller as they go out in the distance. Once you can draw outline of a tree in a convincing manner, it can be used to draw outline of following compositions easily. Study the following outlines and try drawing some of your own. Also try to give layers to the outline as shown below. The outline of a tree should always be drawn with open airy ‘loops’ as shown below.

Drawing tree itself is discussed in depth in this tutorial.
#Tree outline how to
In the following, we first look at how to draw individual tree outline and then look at drawing outline of simple landscapes with trees based on compositions discussed here. look at this tutorial if you haven’t done so already as considerations that apply to drawing trunks also apply when drawing trees. In a tutorial here, we learned how to draw trunk outlines. Next step is to learn to draw outline of landscapes based on these compositions. We looked at some of the compositions with trees here. In this post I discuss drawing outline of trees.
